The Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in Missouri was established in 1866 as one of the first burial grounds for Civil War casualties. It is now managed by the Veterans Administration and is open to all veterans and their spouses. With over 190,000 burials, it is the second largest national cemetery in the US, after Arlington National Cemetery. The cemetery contains both Union and Confederate soldiers, as well as veterans from all of America's armed conflicts. Notable features of the cemetery include a monument to the Unknown Dead of the Civil War, a memorial to women who contributed to the Union's defense, and gravesites of recipients of the Medal of Honor. Among those buried in the cemetery is Lorenzo Dow Immell, who received the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Battle of Wilson's Creek in 1861.
