Franklin Lakes Nature Preserve is a 147-acre reserve in Franklin Lakes and North Haledon that transformed the former Haledon Reservoir into public open space. Created in 1919 when Molly Ann Brook was dammed for drinking water, the site fell out of use by the mid-2000s before Franklin Lakes bought it in 2006 and opened the preserve in 2011. Its varied swamps, wetlands, uplands, berms, and traprock outcrops support diverse plant and animal life, making it a noted bird-watching area. Trails, dikes, fishing access, and links to High Mountain Park Preserve have turned the old reservoir works into a popular place for hiking, boating, picnicking, and fishing.
