Plymouth, Mississippi, is the site of an early settlement on the Tombigbee River opposite Columbus. Tradition ties the area to Hernando de Soto and Bienville, but the documented community emerged around 1819 at John Pitchlynn’s fortified house, known during the Creek War as Fort Smith, a base for Colonel John McKee’s operations against the Red Sticks. Incorporated in 1836, Plymouth grew into a small river village with stores, warehouses, a post office, and an academy. Repeated flooding and poor access to the bluff led most residents to relocate to Columbus by the 1840s, leaving Plymouth abandoned but historically significant.
