Mar Y Cel is a private open-space reserve above Montecito in Santa Barbara County, where historic gardens and public trail access coexist within a protected landscape. Developed around 1916 by Henry E. Bothin and Ellen “Nellie” Chabot Bothin as part of their larger Piranhurst property, it featured elaborate aqueducts, waterworks, statues, a 200-seat amphitheater, and a Tea House. The site was altered after the 1925 Santa Barbara earthquake and later landscape changes. In 2000, conservation protections were strengthened on part of the property, including land preserved from development and access for the Cold Spring Trail. It is also linked to the destructive 2008 Tea Fire.
