Completed in 1940 in Okemos, Michigan, the Goetsch–Winckler House was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for Michigan State art professors Alma Goetsch and Kathrine Winckler. An early Usonian house, it embodies Wright’s vision of compact, modern living for middle-class clients through its one-story in-line plan, open interior, built-in furnishings, and strong horizontal design. The house emerged from the failed Usonia II cooperative project begun in 1938, after which Goetsch and Winckler built the design on another site. After later decline and restoration, it remains a well-preserved example of Wright’s early Usonian work and one of four Wright buildings near Lansing.
