One winter, George's parents bought him a shiny new Flexible Flyer sled, and afterward George and his father rode together, Mr. Marshall's wide girth adding to the sled's weight and velocity. George recalled that he sat in front with a skate on his foot to guide the sled while his father sat behind and was supposed to swing it. On Sundays, the family attended St. Peter's Episcopal Church, where George pumped the church organ until he was eventually fired from that assignment after being caught reading a dime-store novel. The whole family later gathered for George's wedding to Lily Coles of Lexington, Va., on February 11, 1902; from left to right were George's sister Marie, Lily and George, brother Stuart, George's mother Laura, his father George Sr., and Lily's mother Elizabeth Coles.
