The North Dakota Museum of Art, on the University of North Dakota campus in Grand Forks, serves as the state’s official art museum while operating as a private nonprofit with free admission. Originating in the 1970s as the university’s art galleries, it became the official state museum in 1981 and moved in 1989 into the remodeled 1907 West Gymnasium. Artists helped shape the building itself, including Barton Lidice Beneš and Richard Nonas. Its permanent collection includes several notable artists, and it presents changing contemporary exhibitions, concert series, and outreach programs that connect the museum to both the campus and communities across North Dakota.
