Bel Air’s development is reflected in scenes from different periods, including a 1964 aerial view showing the old racetrack, construction of the bypass, and John Carroll before MD Route 24 and the Harford Mall were built; carriage factories on Pennsylvania Avenue in the 1880s, including the Hanna Carriage Factory, with a blacksmith shop that became the first Bel Air Academy; slate sidewalks on Pennsylvania Avenue and Hickory Avenue; what was reportedly the first motel in the state at Hickory Avenue and Moores Mill Road, where Del Haven served Route 1 motorists and local residents; Hickory Avenue before the library or town hall were built; Reuben's Drive in Restaurant as a popular teen gathering place in the 1950s and 1960s; coach service from Edgewood Train station during a time when Bel Air was one of the few Maryland county seats without train service; views of Broadway from Main Street; the Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company, organized in 1923, which moved from a former ice cream plant on Bond Street to the old County Roads Building on Hickory Avenue; the burning of the original Shamrock Mansion to clear land later used for the Bel Air Library, Town Hall, Shamrock Park, the Shamrock Development, and Calvary Baptist Church; the first Catholic church in Bel Air; and soldiers marching down Main Street at the beginning of World War II.
