Saint Stephen's Church was established by the Maryland General Assembly in June, 1751, near Cottingham's Ferry in Worcester County. On the same site, a new church was consecrated by the Right Reverend William R. Whittingham, Bishop of Maryland, in December, 1849, and was subsequently moved to Upper Fairmount, where it was used until 1934.
