Ebenezer Dumont, a native of Vevay, Indiana, served in two wars, first fighting in the Mexican War and earning the rank of lieutenant colonel before returning to a successful political career. When the Civil War began, he enlisted in the Union Army and, as colonel of the 7th Indiana Volunteers in West Virginia, won advancement to brigadier general through service at Philippi, Laurel Hill, Rich Mountain, and Corrick’s Ford. He later led his brigade at Cheat Mountain and Greenbrier River, where he helped defeat Robert E. Lee. During the 1862 Confederate invasion of Kentucky, Dumont’s 12th Division held the state capital at Frankfort, and after the Confederate retreat he marched to Bowling Green and then to Scottsville. A few weeks after his division left Scottsville, Dumont left the army to take a seat in Congress. In 1871 President Ulysses S. Grant appointed him territorial governor of Idaho, but he died before taking office and was buried in Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis.
