Captain Remember Baker, a Vermont pioneer and leader of the Green Mountain Boys, was killed near this spot by Indians while on a scouting expedition in August 1775. He was the first American killed in Canada in the War of the American Revolution. Ira Allen said, "His death made more noise in the country than the loss of a thousand men towards the end of the American War."
