On his last Kentucky raid, CSA Gen. John H. Morgan and his raiders entered the state on June 1, 1864, took Mt. Sterling on June 8, lost it on the 9th, took Lexington on the 10th, and Cynthiana on the 11th. USA forces under Gen. S. G. Burbridge defeated the CSA the next day, and Morgan retreated through here, reaching Virginia on June 20. The raiders never recovered from this reverse.
