A collaboration project begun in October 2014 with the formation of The Lefty Grove Memorial Committee created a park honoring Robert Moses "Lefty" Grove for both his professional and civic accomplishments. The park includes a statue by Maryland native Susan Luery portraying Grove at the height of his career with the American League Philadelphia Athletics; Luery also designed "Babe's Dream" for Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore honoring George Herman "Babe" Ruth. With support from the Maryland legislature and from current and former local residents, the park was dedicated on June 22, 2019. Grove, one of baseball's greatest pitchers, intimidated batters with a fearsome scowl and a fastball, and when the Philadelphia Athletics assigned uniform numbers in 1929 and pitchers wore double numerals, he was given first choice and retained Number 10 throughout his major league career with both the Philadelphia Athletics and the Boston Red Sox, as shown on the statue. The statue also shows his Draper and Maynard Rube Lutzke baseball glove, modeled from Grove's actual glove owned by a local resident, and the pitcher's mound is set at the height used during Grove's career before it was lowered in 1968 from 15 to 10 inches. Designed by architect Zach Klipstein of Allegany County, the park draws façade inspiration from the Eutaw Street entrance to Oriole Park at Camden Yards and emphasizes Grove's history with the International League Baltimore Orioles. Its interpretive path follows a chronological progression of his baseball career from his first professional game with the Martinsburg Mountaineers to his final game with the Boston Red Sox to his induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1947, under the theme "From the coal miners to Cooperstown." Lefty's Place once operated at 10 Union Street about 30 yards from the site until raging flood water destroyed the building in 1996.
