The current courthouse structure on this site, built circa 1932, is the third courthouse there. The original land conveyance took place in 1792, when Dempsey Moore donated 6 acres to Person County “in consideration of the good-will of the people of the County of Person.” An 1842 survey recorded a natural spring on the property. That spring, along with the site’s location at the geographical center of Person County, reflects the logic of placing the courthouse here. In 1978, commissioners voted to construct an addition, which was completed in 1979. In 2010, interior renovations began, including updates to both courtrooms, the creation of offices in the former jail space on the fourth floor, and the installation of security measures. Currently, only judicial offices occupy the building.
