Madira Bickel Mound State Archaeological Site on Terra Ceia Island preserves one of the Tampa Bay area’s oldest Native American ceremonial landscapes. Indigenous occupation reaches back about 2,000 years and spans the Manasota, Weedon Island, and Safety Harbor periods. Its central feature is a large ceremonial mound built from shells, sand, and other refuse, later associated with the Tocobaga, who likely continued to regard it as a sacred place into the historic era before disease and warfare led to their disappearance as a tribe in the eighteenth century. The ten-acre property also includes the Prine Burial Mound and was protected after Madira and Karl Bickel donated the land to the state in 1948.
