On May 23, 1864, Maj. Gen. Grenville M. Dodge’s 16th A.C. of McPherson’s Army of the Tennessee [US] camped at the spring east of here while en route from the Etowah River to Dallas in Paulding County. On May 24, Brig. Gen. J.C. Davis’ 2nd Division, 14th Corps, Army of the Cumberland [US], camped at the spring while en route from Rome to Dallas. These troops were part of the right wing of Sherman’s forces moving to outflank Johnston’s army [CS] at Allatoona, a movement that resulted in 10 days of battle at New Hope Church and Dallas in Paulding County.
