Goochland County, an area of 287 square miles, was formed in 1727 from Henrico and named for William Gooch, Governor of Virginia from 1727 to 1749; Cornwallis and Lafayette passed through this county in 1781. Henrico County, an area of 280 square miles, was an original shire formed in 1634 and was named for Henrico town, founded in 1611 and named for Henry, Prince of Wales. The battles of Seven Pines, Savage Station, Glendale, and Malvern Hill took place in Henrico County in 1862.
