Twenty-five years after the deaths of Doctors William James and Charles Horace Mayo, the citizens of Rochester observed Mayo Centennial Year in 1964 to commemorate the approximate one hundredth anniversary of the Doctors Mayo's birth dates and the fiftieth year of the Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research. In Mayo Memorial Park, the east end of the mall contains statues of Drs. W. J. and C. H. Mayo, co-founders of the Mayo Clinic, sculpted by James Earle Fraser. The William Worrall Mayo statue, created by sculptor Leonard Grunelle, was dedicated in 1915 by a grateful community, later moved to the west end of the mall, and rededicated in 1951. A flagpole erected south of the mall was the gift of Mr. J. H. Kahler in 1929 and was moved to become part of Mayo Memorial Park in 1952. Here they lived and worked for humanity.
