SS Frank O'Connor, originally built as the City of Naples in West Bay City, Michigan, in 1892 and renamed in 1916, sank in Lake Michigan off Cana Island in the autumn of 1919 while carrying 3,000 tons of coal from Buffalo to Milwaukee. A fire broke out in the bow on October 3 and soon destroyed the steering gear, leaving the ship adrift. The keeper of the Cana Island Light and his assistant helped bring the crew safely ashore. Although part of the cargo was recovered, the vessel remained on the lakebed, where its largely intact machinery made it an important archaeological site and popular dive destination.
