A mighty white oak stood here for approximately 235 years, from about 1780 to 2015, beside a saw mill that preceded the once-mighty railroads that later criss-crossed Richland. When the tree died, it still had a 125-foot wingspan. Local tree surgeon Gary Heitz trimmed it into a contemporary piece of art, and chainsaw artist Brian Ackley carved it, creating a tree monument that may be the most unusual tree in New Jersey.
