Sheep Mountain is an 11,244-foot peak in Wyoming’s Gros Ventre Range, within the Gros Ventre Wilderness of Bridger–Teton National Forest. Rising above Jackson Hole as a long ridge, it is especially recognized for the southern profile known as the Sleeping Indian, a defining feature of the valley skyline. The mountain is also tied to major events in the region’s history: its northern end was the site of the Gros Ventre landslide, and in 1996 a U.S. Air Force C-130 Hercules crashed into it after leaving Jackson Hole, killing a U.S. Secret Service agent and eight Air Force personnel. Sheep Mountain remains both a prominent landmark and part of protected backcountry.
