Pahranagat National Wildlife Refuge occupies 5,380 acres at the southern end of Nevada’s Pahranagat Valley, about 90 miles north of Las Vegas. Established on August 16, 1963, and managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as part of the Desert National Wildlife Refuge Complex, it protects wetlands and desert uplands that serve as important migration and wintering habitat along the Pacific Flyway, especially for waterfowl. Restoration work seeks to recover habitat conditions closer to those of more than a century ago. The refuge also includes the prehistoric Black Canyon Petroglyphs and supports species of concern such as the endangered southwestern willow flycatcher and the threatened desert tortoise.
