Southward, the Kittatinny Ridge extends past Lake Marcia into Stokes State Forest and on to the Delaware Water Gap, where the Delaware River cuts deeply through the ridge. The Appalachian Trail follows the ridge here, crossing the Delaware River at the Water Gap and continuing into Pennsylvania along the Appalachians. This point is the highest elevation on the Kittatinny Ridge, part of the Appalachian Mountain Range. The ridge’s spine is formed by Shawangunk Conglomerate, a very hard, erosion-resistant bedrock, and conglomerate boulders dense with quartzite pebbles are abundant along it. At 1600 feet above sea level, Lake Marcia is the highest lake in New Jersey and has drawn picnickers, swimmers, and fishers since the 1800s. In the 1930s, the view included the Kuser Mansion standing on the bluff overlooking the lake.
