Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park grew from caves discovered on Iron Mountain above Glenwood Springs in the late 1800s, when Charles W. Darrow opened them to visitors in 1895 and introduced unusually early electric lighting underground. After closing in 1917, the caves were restored and reopened in 1999 under Steve and Jeanne Beckley, whose project combined access, conservation, and scientific work. The site expanded from cave tours into a mountaintop amusement destination with gondolas, rides, and attractions, including the Cliffhanger roller coaster and the drop tower later renamed Crystal Tower. Despite fatal and other ride accidents, the site remains notable for its caverns, mountain setting, and National Natural Landmark designation in 2023.
