The Fanwood Oak, a white oak known as Quercus alba, stood on this site and was believed to be the oldest tree in Fanwood and possibly the county, with its age established at between 320 and 400 years old. It measured approximately 19 feet in circumference and had a crown measuring about 108 feet. Determined to be diseased and beyond saving, it was cut down beginning on November 4, 1996, after Powhatan Native American Chief Roy Crazy Horse performed a traditional ceremony for the death of a tree the day before. The Fanwood Oak is pictured on the seal of the Borough of Fanwood.
