Mount Emma is a prominent 13,581-foot summit in Colorado’s San Juan Mountains, just north of Telluride in the Sneffels Range of Uncompahgre National Forest. Although not among the state’s very highest peaks, it ranks 197th in Colorado and 10th in its range, and its steep rise above Telluride gives it an especially dramatic profile. The mountain is known as a difficult climb, with major elevation gain whether approached from Yankee Boy Basin or from Telluride. Set in an alpine subarctic climate with snowy winters and summer thunderstorms, its slopes drain into tributaries of the San Miguel River, and its name has been officially recognized by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names.
