From around 1822 into the early years of the 20th century, a grist mill and accompanying distillery stood in what is now Rock Bridge Memorial State Park, owned and operated at various times by several prominent families. This millstone is a runner stone from the last mill at Rock Bridge Mill, when the mill was owned by the Heibel family. The runner was the top stone that rotated opposite the mating, fixed bed stone. Millstones ground grain for baking, animal feed, and, here, distilling spirits. This stone is estimated to date to 1880, weighs approximately 1,300 pounds, has an 8-inch center hole with four rynd notches, and has two lift holes on opposite sides so it could be raised from the bed stone for maintenance.
