In 1916, the Great Northern Railroad extended its branch line north from Choteau. James Hill, the president of the railroad, had promised his friend L.B. Pendroy that he would build a railroad to his home. Because the railroad was never extended across Farmers Coulee, the town was named Pendroy in his honor.
