Grand View Spire is a 400-foot sandstone pillar in Colorado National Monument in western Colorado, rising to 5,821 feet above sea level on the west side of Monument Canyon near Grand View Overlook. Part of the monument’s erosional landscape, it stands just south of Independence Monument and northwest of Kissing Couple. Its geology spans immense time: the main tower is Wingate Sandstone formed from wind-blown dunes about 200 million years ago, capped by Kayenta Formation sandstone, with Chinle Formation at its base and much older Precambrian rock exposed on the canyon floor below. It is also a climbing destination, with recorded routes dating from 1961 and 1991.
