Central Mountain, a 2,247-foot mountain on the Allegheny Front in northeastern Pennsylvania, spans parts of Columbia, Sullivan, and Luzerne counties and is Columbia County’s northernmost mountain and second-highest summit. Known historically as North Mountain, it took its modern name between 1860 and 1900 from the nearby village of Central, which also lent its name to the local Central District. Its slopes combine glacial landforms, wet muck soils, and bedrock formations that support wetlands and open sedge meadows. Ranked a priority 1 site on the Columbia County Natural Areas Inventory, it is valued for northern hardwood forest, rare natural communities, the federally endangered northeastern bulrush, and diverse bird, amphibian, and mammal life.
