The English Pole Barn was an early example of a settler’s outbuilding in 1890 and served as the focal point of daily life on an early Florida homestead. Structures like this were usually built of pole sapling supported by large logs, with roofs made from palm fronds or cedar shakes. The barn functioned as a work center for storing farm implements and tools, providing shade from the sun and protection for farm animals, with cribs for crops including grains, peas, corn, and a variety of seeds, and a loft for hay to feed the animals. It belonged to the English family, and the log cabin and pole barn were treated as companion pieces because they were built around the same period and both belonged to that family.
