Joyce S. Hebert worked with her husband, Gary Hebert, in the fight to save the Plaquemine Lock and a portion of historic Bayou Plaquemine. Their efforts led to the lock and bayou being named a national and a state historic site. She later founded the Friends of the Plaquemine Lock Historic Site Inc. and served as charter president for 7 years. She worked tirelessly to keep the lock open to the public and to educate others about its significance.
