Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge in New Mexico is a protected area near Albuquerque and the Rio Grande, managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service within the National Wildlife Refuge System. Once operated for decades as a dairy farm and later covered largely by alfalfa and fescue fields, the land was saved from possible suburban housing through purchase negotiations by the Trust for Public Land. Set aside for federal improvements in 2011 and transferred to the Fish and Wildlife Service in 2012, it has since been restored toward native Middle Rio Grande Valley habitat, including plans to extend bosque onto the property. Completed in 2015, the refuge reached 570.03 acres and became a notable urban refuge in the Southwest region.
