The Gasquet Ranger Station Historic District preserves the core of the former Gasquet Ranger District station along the Smith River in northern California. Developed beginning in 1933 to replace the earlier Smith Fork Ranger Station, the complex was built mainly by Civilian Conservation Corps crews under district ranger Adolph Nilsson. Seven CCC-era buildings and a rock wall survive, including the main office, assistant ranger’s residence, garages, warehouse, and fuel house, many showing a rustic Northwest-influenced design with recurring pine tree motifs. Distinctive for bringing regional Forest Service design ideas into California, the site also remains the main Forest Service visitor contact point for the Smith River National Recreation Area.
