The Allegheny County Fair was Pennsylvania's top outdoor show, spanning more than 200 acres and drawing as many as two million people over five days with entertainment, harvest competitions, industrial exhibits, product and service displays, farm machinery, livestock, flowers, sports, parades, and fashion shows. Traditionally held on Labor Day weekend, it ended with a fireworks show on Labor Day evening that signaled the end of summer for children as school usually began the next day. President Truman visited in 1949 and called it the "greatest fair in the world," drawing a crowd of 300,000 in one day for his speech. As farming in Allegheny County declined by the late 1960s, the fair could no longer be supported, and the last big fair took place in 1973. Efforts to revive it in 1999 and 2000 relied on animals brought from Round Hill Park because of limited interest from the farming community, and by 2000 the event emphasized technology rather than farming because of changes in the regional economy.
