Culberson Woods State Nature Preserve in Clinton County, Ohio, protects one of the largest surviving remnants of the white swamp forest that once spread across parts of Ohio and Indiana’s Till Plains. This uncommon forest grows on poorly drained white clay, with wet winters and dry summers shaping its ecology. The preserve’s 40 acres contain red maple, pin oak, shagbark and shellbark hickory, swamp white oak, American elm, sweetgum, and less typical Till Plains species such as pumpkin ash and winterberry, along with summer wildflowers including purple fringeless orchid and cardinal flower. It remains an important survival of a once far more widespread regional landscape.
