Joseph D. Grant County Park is a nine-thousand-five-hundred-fifty-three-acre regional park in the Diablo Range foothills east of the Santa Clara Valley and the largest county park in Santa Clara County. Its land was assembled by Joseph D. Grant from property that had once belonged to the Rancho Cañada de Pala Mexican land grant, and he used the ranch for cattle grazing, recreation, and hunting. After Grant’s death in 1942, Santa Clara County bought roughly 9,553 acres in 1975 to create the public park. Near Mount Hamilton, the park preserves varied terrain, supports species of special concern, and serves as a major open-space and recreation area.
