Mullens was settled by A.J. Mullins in 1894, and its spelling changed through a failure to dot the “i.” It became the center of the smokeless coal field. The first commercial coal mine in this county opened there in 1908. The Virginian Railroad reached the town in 1906, and it was incorporated in 1912.
