Bel Air preserves a broad architectural and civic history through a north and south walking tour that includes churches, houses, schools, public buildings, industrial sites, and commercial streets dating from the late 18th century into the 20th. On the north route are the 1888 Bel Air Methodist Episcopal Church, the circa 1825 Graham Crocker House, the 1914 James-Kennedy House, modest late 19th- and early 20th-century worker housing on Alice Anne and Williams Streets, the 1917 Wren Box, Liriodendron as the summer retreat of Dr. Howard Kelly and his family, the Reckord industrial complex begun in 1886, First Presbyterian Church with its 1881 building rebuilt in 1936 from the original blueprints, Emmanuel Episcopal Church designed in 1896 by Wyatt and Nolting, East Broadway as a street of substantial 19th-century residences, the 1865 Proctor House, an 1882 Bel Air Academy school building, the 1936 Bel Air Post Office built under the WPA, and the 1879 Hopkins House. On the south route are the Harford County Courthouse and Square, where Bel Air has had a courthouse since 1791 and the present building rose after an 1858 fire before later enlargements, the castle-like Bel Air Armory, the 1814 Bel Air Academy, the 1852 Odd Fellows Lodge later known as First Presbyterian Church, Fulford Cottage with an uncertain construction date between 1789 and 1823, the 1789 Van Bibber House, the 1788 Hays House later enlarged in 1814 and moved in part in 1960, the 1924 Bel Air Colored High School that became the town's high school for African Americans in 1935, the 1901 Hanway-Archer-Forwood House, the 1871 First Aegis Building, and Office and Courtland Streets as a long-standing center of Bel Air's political, economic, and social life.
