East of the oil house stood the remains of a T-shaped pier that jutted into the lake. The Coast Guard tender Hyacinth docked there periodically with supplies, kerosene, a library book box, and visits from Spot, a friendly dalmatian dog. Small iron rails like railroad tracks ran from a boathouse on shore to the end of the pier. In the early days of the Wind Point Lighthouse, rough, rutted, and often impassable roads led the keepers and their families to use the light station's boat to row to downtown Racine for church and shopping. The boat sat on a trolley cart so the keepers could push it along the rails to the end of the pier, then lift it with a hoist, swing it over the water, and lower it in.
