Greenbrier County was formed in 1778 from Botetourt and Montgomery and was named for the river that drains it. The county had many pioneer forts and saw many bloody Indian battles, and it is home to the world-famed White Sulphur and other mineral springs. Summers County was formed in 1871 from Monroe, Fayette, Greenbrier, and Mercer and was named for the distinguished jurist of Kanawha, George W. Summers. In 1750, Dr. Thomas Walker and his companions explored the Greenbrier Valley for the Greenbrier Company.
