KELT is a two-telescope astronomical survey built to find transiting exoplanets around relatively bright stars that had received less attention from other search programs. Operating from Arizona and near Sutherland in South Africa, the robotic system gave the project broad sky coverage and near-global reach. Its telescopes used wide-field lenses, modest apertures, and inexpensive off-the-shelf components to repeatedly monitor large areas of sky with automated observations. Installed in 2005 and 2009, the system ran for years and produced several exoplanet discoveries, including KELT-1b. Its importance lies both in its scientific results and in showing that carefully targeted planet searches could succeed with simple, low-cost instruments.
