Contra Costa County honored those from the county who served in World War I and remembered the seventy-seven who lost their lives, including a roll of the dead from 1914 to 1918. The county contributed 6341 men and women to the war effort, and its Board of Supervisors had memorial halls erected for veterans in Antioch, Brentwood, Crockett, Danville, Martinez, Pittsburg, Richmond, and Walnut Creek. The memorial was made possible by numerous donors, companies, committee members, public officials, and newspapers, and it was dedicated by the Grand Parlor N.S.G.W. on December 11, 1927. It was later dedicated to the memory of those who paid the supreme sacrifice in World War II and the Korean Conflict on Memorial Day 1954, and rededicated on May 25, 1998 to honor all men and women who served and continue to serve in the armed forces of the United States.
