Barfoot Lookout Complex was a forest fire lookout on Buena Vista Peak in Arizona’s Chiricahua Mountains, built in 1935 as a compact mountaintop station with a lookout house, shed, privy, concrete cistern, and stone retaining wall. Likely constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Depression era, it represented a broader expansion of forest infrastructure across the American West. Its exceptional importance lay in its preservation: when placed on the National Register of Historic Places, its structures remained unaltered from their original construction, making it one of the Southwestern Region’s best surviving examples of a 1930s fire lookout. The Horseshoe 2 Fire destroyed the complex in 2011.
