Locust Creek Covered Bridge, about six miles outside Hillsboro in Pocahontas County, West Virginia, is the county’s only surviving covered bridge and now carries pedestrians across Locust Creek. First built in 1870 as a wooden Warren Double Intersection truss, it measured 114 feet by 13.5 feet. After the original bridge burned in 1888, it was replaced and rebuilt again in 1904 by W. M. Irvine, who renewed major structural elements. Rather than being abandoned, it was repeatedly maintained, including work in 1968 and renovation after a concrete bypass opened in 1990. Its rarity and long survival preserve a once-common form of rural bridge building in West Virginia.
