Beartown State Park occupies 110 acres on the eastern summit of Droop Mountain near Hillsboro in West Virginia, mostly in Greenbrier County with a small section in Pocahontas County. Created from land bought in 1970 with support from the Nature Conservancy and a memorial donation from Mrs. Edwin G. Polan for her son Ronald Keith Neal, it has been kept largely undeveloped so its geology remains central. The park is known for Pennsylvanian-age Droop or Pottsville Sandstone formations, including massive boulders, overhanging cliffs, deep crevasses, and eroded pits, with ice and snow sometimes lingering in shaded fissures until midsummer.
