Droop Mountain, a small peak in the Allegheny Mountains of southeastern West Virginia on the Greenbrier-Pocahontas county line, became one of the state’s most important Civil War sites. Its position along the west bank of the Greenbrier River made it a barrier to north-south movement and a significant obstacle to troop travel. On November 6, 1863, Union forces attacked and drove off the Confederate defenders there, a victory that essentially ended organized Confederate resistance in West Virginia. Much of the mountain is now preserved within Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park, and its name is thought to derive from its drooping outline.
