An unknown Union soldier was buried here after appearing, gravely ill and unable to say his name or where he came from, at the door of Eliza Ann Riehle, who tried to save him before he died. Eliza and her husband Anselem, or Anselum, Riehle had worked the family farm in the valley until 1864, when Anselem was called to serve in the Union Army but fell overboard while voyaging down the Ohio River to join his unit, and his body was never found. According to folklore, a few days after Eliza was informed of her husband's death, she and her neighbors buried the unknown soldier under a maple tree, where his grave could serve as a memorial to all those lost in the Civil War.
