On Oct. 23, 1862, the 22nd USA Brigade, including the 1st, 2nd, and 20th Kentucky Infantry, moved here in the wake of retreating CSA forces. Five hundred men worked 36 hours to destroy salt works mainly owned by unionists but used by Confederates. Loyal USA citizens were allowed to remove enough salt for their own needs after taking an oath that none of it would be used to benefit the Confederacy.
