Bothwell Lodge State Historic Site preserves the distinctive summer home that Sedalia attorney John Homer Bothwell developed on his Stonyridge Farm north of Sedalia, Missouri. Built in four phases between 1897 and 1928 atop a rock bluff, the 31-room limestone lodge reflects eclectic design with strong Craftsman influence and an unusual attempt to use a natural cave for cooling. Widowed for much of his life, Bothwell made the house a gathering place for family and friends. After his death, the property passed to the Bothwell Lodge Club under terms that eventually led to state ownership in 1969 and acceptance in 1974, and the site now includes additional buildings, trails, and picnic areas.
